Endorsement in The Episcopal Church
The Association of Episcopal Chaplains cooperates with the Office of Mission and Program of the Episcopal Church. The Rev. Margaret Rose, Deputy for Ecumenical and Interfaith Collaboration and Endorsing Officer for the Episcopal Church, advocates for specialized ministries at the Episcopal Church Center; and Ann Hercules, Associate for Ministry Beyond the Episcopal Church, processes applications for endorsement. AEC works with the Office of Mission and Program to encourage endorsement and to support Episcopalians seeking certification by the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC); the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE); the American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC); the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy (CPSP); the National Association of Veterans Affairs Chaplains (NAVAC); and other national certifying organizations.
If you are seeking endorsement in the Church, or certification by a national professional organization, your first step is to inform your bishop if your intent, and if you haven't already, to meet your bishop. Then, complete the Application for Ecclesiastical Healthcare Endorsement. As the form notes, the office will contact your bishop, and will take the steps appropriate to your endorsement. As of 2021, applicants are asked to send in their applications within three months of submitting paperwork for certification. If the applicant is known to his or her bishop, the endorsement process should be quick. Endorsement can be included when papers are submitted, and will not require renewal before certification is completed.
